States a Process can be in during its lifetime, managed by the Operating System (OS).

States

  • Created - process is being created
  • Ready (Waiting) - waiting to be assigned to the Central Processing Unit (CPU)
  • Running - instructions are being executed
  • Blocked - waiting for an event (I/O, signal, lock)
  • Terminated - process has finished execution
  • Swapped Out and Ready - ready but memory swapped to disk
  • Swapped Out and Blocked - blocked and memory swapped to disk
